Why investors are choosing The Bahamas

Tops in the Caribbean area

A stable economy, low taxes, a bouyant rental market and an investment-friendly government have all conspired to make The Bahamas a top choice for foreign investors.

In fact, The Bahamas was chosen as the number-one country for real estate investment in the Caribbean area by the Global Property Guide–edging out The Cayman Islands, British Virgin Islands, Guadeloupe and Jamaica–from among 13 Caribbean countries.

This comes as no surprise to Bahamian realtors. Beautiful weather, pristine water, miles of powder beaches and the laid-back island lifestyle make the archipelago irresistible.

Another attraction for North Americans is that The Bahamas is right next door to the United States, a short hop from Florida and the US Eastern Seaboard.

All this has captured the imagination of high-net-worth families, sports heroes and movie stars. Sean Connery, Johnny Depp, and Eddie Murphy are just three of Tinseltown’s leading men who have fallen for the islands’ allure. But of equal or even greater importance are upper-middle-class people from around the world who, along with the very wealthy, also want a piece of paradise.

The Ministry of Tourism loves foreign homeowners because they’re committed to The Bahamas: Once they own a place, they are far more likely to spend all their holidays and then their retirement here. The Bahamas offers a lively social scene that includes excursions, dining out, live entertainment, gambling, sightseeing, deep-sea fishing, boating, golfing and–as all the ads say–much, much more.

According to realtors, vacant land is currently appreciating at about 10 per cent a year and some private islands at closer to 100 per cent a year.

In our sister publication, The Bahamas Investor, John Christie, managing director of the H G Christie real estate firm, notes that a 10-acre island purchased in 1993 for about $80,000 was worth a cool $2.1 million in 2007, and even more today.
