DINING & ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE - JAN 2003

It's a beautiful day in the islands

Go out and play

Beyond the confines of your hotel is an outdoor world of adventure limited only by your energy level.

The adventure can be as exciting as your heart will allow, or as peaceful as a hammock. The choice is yours.

The ocean is obviously the largest playground in The Bahamas - there are 100,000 square miles of it, and only 5,000 square miles of land - so much of the outdoor action is at or below sea level.

Boating, naturally, is the activity of choice for many visitors. And the fleet is as broad as your imagination. You can paddle a kayak over a clear blue sea or watch the world below from a glass-bottom boat. You can zoom at 55 miles per hour across the banks to remote islands, or sail leisurely into the sunset while sipping a cocktail.

Lifetime thrill
Island World Adventures is a thrilling high-speed trip to the Exumas for a day of snorkelling and exploring. A pair of 45-ft powerboats, Tattoo and Ecotime, whisk you across the banks to Allan's Cay and Saddleback Cay in the upper Exumas. This day-long all-inclusive excursion can include feeding iguanas, sharks, stingrays and barracudas, snorkelling, collecting shells on a secluded beach or hiking a nature trail, with an open bar and Bahamian luncheon buffet thrown in.

Slowing down
A sailing trip is a perfect change of pace. Light to moderate winds and calm seas make this a great place for a relaxing sail. Day trips and evening cruises are available.

The 57-ft catamaran Flying Cloud offers a half or full day of leisurely adventure that takes you from Paradise Island to a deserted Rose Island beach for swimming, snorkelling and beach volleyball, if you're inclined. Or just stroll the white powdery beach. With Capt Craig at the helm and his professional crew pouring rum punch and soft drinks, the excursion is always over too quickly.

Going down
But being on the ocean is not enough. Every visitor must see what's in the ocean to really appreciate The Bahamas. A diving or snorkelling trip with one of Nassau's many dive operators can fulfill this requirement. Nassau Scuba Centre at Coral Harbour offers a whole range of diving opportunities including scuba instruction, snorkelling and exciting dive trips. Their 40 regular dive locations include wrecks, reefs, walls and blue holes, including Nassau's Lost Ocean Hole. The 13 wreck sites include four sunken cutters and two James Bond film locations: Thunderball and Tears of Allah wrecks.

This five-star PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) training facility also offers shark feeding excursions, drop-off dives into the nearby Tongue of the Ocean and, by pre-arrangement, Out Island trips and drift dives through Current Cut between Eleuthera and Current Island.

These aren't your only choices for outdoor activities. You can swim with dolphins, feed stingrays, play a round of golf or a game of tennis, gamble in a casino, visit a museum, watch marching flamingoes, go horseback riding or visit an Out Island.

Of course you can always relax in a hammock with a tropical drink and watch the world go by. That's enough adventure for some.
