DINING & ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE - JAN 2005

Active pursuits

Great dining is only the beginning

Don?t be content to stay in your hotel on your vacation. No matter how much the hotels and resorts have to offer, Nassau offers far more in the way of adventure activities. Participate in just a few, and your holiday in The Bahamas will be unforgettable.

To find out what?s available, visit the tour desk in your hotel and pick up a copy of What-to-do magazine and the Bahamas Trailblazer Maps. They?re available free just about everywhere in Nassau and Paradise Island.

There?s so much to do and a limited budget is no excuse to not have a good time. For example, it doesn?t cost a dime to explore historic downtown Nassau, with its quaint alcoves, narrow side streets, and lively bars and caféó. There?s the famous Nassau straw market, now in temporary quarters at the west end of the downtown strip on Bay Street, and check out the Pompey Museum and and the National Art Gallery of The Bahamas. Then there are the glorious soft, white beaches and the beautiful Atlantic Ocean ? all available at no cost.

Close encounters

But you really should try to work in a couple of excursions that will bring you into a close encounter with the country?s principal attraction: its crystal clear, warm water.

Imagine yourself tearing over this pristine sea in a powerful speedboat or sailing away to a secluded tropical island.

If you are especially adventurous, imagine yourself 50 ft down in a limitless blue heaven, face to face with a Caribbean reef shark. It?s an experience you?ll never forget. Stuart Cove?s Dive Bahamas offers a shark dive that will make your hair stand on end, as well as a host of other, less daring, dives for people at all levels of experience.

Non-divers can snorkel or take advantage of Stuart Cove?s submersible scooter known as Scenic Underwater Bubble (SUB), which is a great way for non-divers to experience the thrill of diving without the time and expense of taking a course.

More close encounters

If you haven?t had enough contact with marine life, Dolphin Encounters offers two dynamic encounters with some of nature?s smartest mammals. The three-hour excursion to Blue Lagoon Island includes an interactive experience with bottlenose dolphins, either from a shallow platform, or swimming in the water. In the swimming encounter, the dolphins will perform the ?foot push,? propelling you through the water by pushing you by your feet. It?s an experience you?ll never forget .

Wild ride to Saddleback

Forty miles from Nassau in the Exumas is one of the prettiest cays you could imagine, complete with a deserted beach, a hilltop lookout, and a fish-feeding platform from which you can toss scraps to weirdly shaped houndfish and sleek lemon sharks.

Saddleback Cay is the destination of a day-long, all-inclusive excursion offered by Island World Adventures. The trip includes a 55 mph ride to the Exumas aboard one of two 45-ft powerboats, Tattoo or Ecotime, including a scrumptious Bahamian lunch on outdoor dining decks, snorkelling on a nearby reef and a stopover at Allan?s Cay, where you can feed prehistoric looking iguanas.

Cruise your cares away

Another perfect way to enjoy the incomparable Bahamian sea is to set sail aboard the Flying Cloud, a 57-ft catamaran that sails out of the Paradise Island Ferry Terminal.

Every morning except Sunday, you can count on Captain Craig and his attentive crew to take you on a memorable 31?2-hour snorkelling expedition to Rose Island.

Sunday is a special day, set aside for a relaxing five-hour cruise that includes not only snorkelling but lunch, drinks and relaxation on a private beach.

Three nights a week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday) there is also a 21?2-hr cruise of Nassau Harbour under the stars ? a perfect way to build a long lasting memory of The Bahamas.
