Dinner's waiting

DINING & ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE - JAN 2006

Dinner's waiting

Within walking distance

There's a smorgasbord of tastes and enjoyment waiting to delight any appetite in Nassau. Get a hunger pang, and there's a restaurant waiting to satisfy it. And the good news is that no matter where hunger strikes, there's a great meal nearby. For the hearty appetite, it might be a buffet, and Nassau offers several. The sophisticated palate may prefer one of the city's fine restaurants.

And for the adventuresome - it's open season and choices galore.

Like all truly cosmopolitan cities, Nassau doesn't just feed its visitors. It offers choices on top of choices for diners. There's everything from the fast menu of the Golden Arches and its fast food cousins to casual dining to world-class restaurants that challenge those in San Francisco, Rome or London.

Downtown

The downtown shopper will find more than 50 restaurants in the city's commercial district offering everything from hamburgers to Chinese and Indian food. These smaller, often family-run, cafes feature freshly prepared meals that are usually cooked when ordered and often use treasured family recipes handed down through the generations.

Just a short taxi ride from the city centre along East Bay St, fine and casual restaurants offer a view of the harbour to complement the dining experience. More than a dozen are featured in the Nassau & inland dining section starting on pg 51.

Paradise Island

Visitors staying on Paradise Island can enjoy a short walk and then top it off with a rewarding meal at one of more than a dozen restaurants. Island restaurants range from the elegant to the casual, and their menus match. Diners can choose anything from a submarine sandwich to an entree flown in that afternoon from another continent. Diners can even take an evening sailing excursion complete with a fine meal. Several of the island's best are profiled in the Paradise Island dining section starting on pg 63.

West Bay/Cable Beach

Choices also abound along West Bay St, also known as the Cable Beach strip. Within a 15-min walk, hungry diners will find more than two dozen options with menus to fit all tastes and budgets. Visitors can experience everything from a relaxed Italian dinner alfresco to a traditional Bahamian dinner or a multi-course meal served on fine linen with silver place settings in a dining room. For details read the Cable Beach & west dining section beginning on pg 68, which lists many favourites.

Reservations advised

Wherever visitors' appetites take them, they can find it in Nassau. Usually, it's only a short walk to get there. Even when a cab is needed, it's going to be a short ride. Remember, most of the finer restaurants expect reservations. It's best to make them early since many offer only limited seating, and they fill quickly.
Life in The Bahamas is casual, but it's still a good idea to check on dress codes when making reservations. Or rely on the information in the Dining & Entertainment Guide.
