Happy is the hour
Nassau’s convivial watering holes

When it’s time to take a break after a strenuous day of holidaying, you’ll find plenty of places where you can enjoy a beverage and rub shoulders with working locals in convivial surroundings.

On Paradise Island, the Blue Lagoon Seafood Restaurant, at the end of the bridge to Paradise Island, offers happy hour from 5-7pm Monday through Saturday, with two-for-one drinks and hot hors d’oeuvres in the Oasis Lounge.

Follow the signs to the waterfront and the Columbus Tavern, located at the Paradise Harbour Club & Marina, just off Paradise Island Dr. Half-priced beer and mixed drinks and complimentary hors d’oeuvres are served there from 5-7pm daily.

Cruise ship visitors will easily find the Kafé Kalik, located upstairs at Festival Place on Prince George Wharf, where the cruise ships dock. Running from
5-7pm on Fridays and Saturdays, their lively happy hour celebration features two-for-one drinks.

Easier to spot is the imposing British Colonial Hilton hotel at No 1 Bay St, where happy hour reigns from 3-6pm on Fridays in Black Beard’s Bar. Mixed drinks, wines and Heineken and Kalik beer are just $3, including free peanuts and popcorn.

Just off Bay St downtown, rock ’n’ roll fans gather in the Hard Rock Cafe on Charlotte St to observe happy hour between 5-8pm on weekdays. Reduced prices on most beers and mixed drinks are available.

Head east on Bay St past the Paradise Island exit bridge and you’ll find Jumbey Cafe Bar & Grill. Happy hour in this charming old Bahamian home prevails from 5:30-8pm weekdays and all Saturday evening, when beers cost $3. Across the street at Nassau Yacht Haven, sits the first Poop Deck location. Overlooking Nassau Harbour and Paradise Island, happy hour at this classic Bahamian seafood restaurant showcases free hors d'oeuvres and reduced drink prices, at the bar only, 5-7pm daily.

Happy hour has a British flavour at the popular Cricket Club Restaurant & Pub, located west of downtown, opposite Arawak Cay, at the foot of historic Fort Charlotte (built in 1789). Drink specials are offered daily from 5-7pm and free wine, rum and food tasting on Friday evenings, either in the jolly pub room or on the balcony, which overlooks a cricket field.

A popular happy hour hangout on the west side of the island is The Poop Deck on Sandyport Beach, with a gorgeous ocean view. This restaurant serves free hors d’oeuvres and cut-priced drinks at the bar every day, except Mon, from 5-7pm.

Keep heading west to Gambier and you’ll find the venerable Traveller’s Rest, “the home of the banana daiquiri.” This popular indoor-outdoor dining establishment celebrates happy hour every Friday from 6-9pm with free hors d’oeuvres, reduced prices on beer and “happy chairs” with small gifts concealed under them for some lucky patrons.

A little farther out West Bay St is Compass Point, a casually classy restaurant located on the ocean, with one bar inside and another one on the open-air deck. Drink specials are offered daily from 5pm until closing.
