Fun things to do

Many ways to enjoy your visit

Besides a host of places to enjoy good food and drink, Nassau and Paradise Island offer a large menu of things to see and do.

To get started, you could stroll down Bay St and shop for souvenirs, artwork, jewellery and luxury goods with designer brand names such as Gucci, Fendi and Rolex. Or you can take a horse-drawn surrey ride to see the historic sights downtown.

Vacationers can also absorb more Bahamian history with a visit to the Pompey Museum of Slavery & Emancipation, located next to the Straw Market. Then you could walk up Market St to an architectural treasure called the Balcony House.

Or how about playing a round of golf? Everyone is invited to play the Cable Beach Golf Club course, a scenic par-71 layout that was redesigned by Fred Settle Jr of Florida in 2003.

Watch or play
Those who would rather watch than play can take in a weekend cricket match while enjoying a meal and cold drinks at the appropriately named Cricket Club. The playing field and the friendly British/Bahamian pub reside in the shadow of historic Ft Charlotte, just west downtown.

While you’re in this area you could take a guided tour of the sprawling 18th-century fort and view Nassau Harbour from this high ground.

From the fort you can walk up Chippingham Rd to the Ardastra Gardens, Zoo & Conservation Center, a place that’s always a hit with the kids. Here you can explore five acres of tropical gardens and see more than 200 mammals and reptiles from all over the world. The resident stars are the famous marching flamingos, who perform three shows daily.

Most visitors can’t resist the call of The Bahamas’ beautiful blue sea, so many tour companies provide ways to enjoy it. Sunshine Cruises, for example, offers snorkelling excursions and glass-bottom boat tours from Woodes Rogers Walk to a scenic reef, and the catamaran Flying Cloud takes you to nearby Rose Island to snorkel and relax on the peaceful beach.

If you’re a certified diver, you can get into the deep with Stuart Cove’s Dive Bahamas, located on the southwest coast. They offer thrilling shark-feeding dives as well as reef and wreck diving, along with snorkelling tours.
