DINING & ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE - JULY 2003

Nassau nightlife

Eat well - you'll need the energy

Whether your idea of a fabulous evening starts with an unpronounceable French entrée or a hearty Bahamian meal, you can cap the evening with a healthy portion of entertainment at your choice of lively New Providence and Paradise Island night spots.

The action can start with the pulsating sounds and rhythmic frenzy of a Junkanoo ?rush out? at Café Johnny Canoe, at the Nassau Beach Hotel on Cable Beach.

Enjoy the colourful parade every Friday night at 8pm in the lively indoor-outdoor restaurant, or catch some Bahamian and Caribbean musical culture with live rake n? scrape, calypso and soca music by Herbie and Da Crew every Friday and Saturday from 7:30pm to 12 midnight. Columbus Tavern on Paradise Island also features live music on the weekends ? Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights starting at 7pm.

If you can?t wait until the weekend, renowned Bahamian recording artist Jay Mitchell & Hot Ice perform Tuesday through Saturday at Palm Court in the British Colonial Hilton on Bay St. The band plays a wide range of music, from ballads to calypso favourites, in the intimate lounge, beginning at 9:30pm. Enjoy finger foods, dancing and special Bailey?s promotions on Thursday ? ladies? night.

From Wednesday to Sunday, the Energizers keep evening patrons entertained in the Oasis Lounge at Club Land?Or.

Cool vibes

For a different kind of ambience, visit The Living Room in the Nassau Beach Hotel. Relax with a cocktail on a comfortable sofa and soak up the cool vibes. A live band plays on Friday and Saturday nights.

The Stage Lounge at the Wyndham Nassau comes alive with Dream Quest from Tuesday through Sunday. In the softly lit lounge overlooking the bustling casino, the ?reggae-soca-junkanoo? trio plays a little bit of everything, including your requests, beginning at 9:30pm.

Or get the full Bahamian experience with a native show at The King & Knights in Cable Beach. King Eric features the limbo, fire dancing, a steel pan player and local pop-culture icon, Count Bernadino, belting out what will soon become your favourite island songs. The nightly 8:30pm show is preceded by a four-course meal and dancing. You?re invited to join in the Junkanoo finale.

Jokers Wild Comedy Club in the Coral Towers at Atlantis has resident and visiting comics at 9:30pm every day except Monday. Admission is $20 and seats fill up fast, so it?s good to get there early.

Karaoke and jazz

Audience participation creates the fun during karaoke nights at Pirates of Nassau?s Pirate Pub. Sing along to popular tunes on Saturday nights from 9pm-12 midnight.

You?ll find live jazz at Chez Willie, on Bay St, just west of the British Colonial Hilton. G Note and the All Starz entertains in the courtyard on Saturday nights starting at 10pm. There is a $20 cover charge, $10 for diners.

The Piano Bar at Villaggio, in the Caves Village development on West Bay St, offers an escape into a different world. The colonial charm of the surroundings is outdone only by the quality of the live jazz on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. A rustic, tiled outdoor terrace has relaxed seating around low tables, with soothing sounds of the outdoor fountain emanating from the courtyard below.

Even more jazz, as well as classic R&B music, can be found at the Blue Note Lounge at the British Colonial Hilton. Catch the live band on Friday and Saturday nights.

Late-night action

Also at the British Colonial Hilton, Señor Frogs has a live band nightly, as well as an MC to keep the party going. The restaurant and nightclub, right on Nassau Harbour, is open every night until 3am. There is a cover charge.

Some crave action well into the early morning hours. For those with the energy, Club Waterloo, The Zoo Nightclub, Bahama Boom, Fluid Lounge, Dragons nightclub in Atlantis, Cocktails & Dreams, Club 601, Club Med?s nightclub and Hurricanes Disco at SuperClubs Breezes vibrate with dancing and carousing into the wee hours.

Of course any story on nightlife in Nassau must include the glittering casinos ? the Crystal Palace Casino at Cable Beach and the Casino at Atlantis. Both offer all-night excitement at the slot machines, and late night and early morning action at the tables.

If all this sounds too energetic, but you still want to be entertained, imitate the ancient Greeks, who used music to aid digestion and maintain harmony of the body and soul. East Villa, Montagu Gardens, Buena Vista and Graycliff offer light piano music to accompany fine dining.

From high noon to the early hours, the sun never sets on your good time. Pick up your free copy of What-to-do magazine for a complete description of daytime entertainment options.
