DINING & ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE - JULY 2005

Nightlife in Nassau

Where fun never sleeps

Night owls are never in the dark when it comes to nightlife in Nassau and Paradise Island. Whether it's dancing the night away at a nightclub or enjoying a quiet evening at a restaurant, the options are endless.

You can start with a rhythmic dose of Junkanoo at Cafe Johnny Canoe, at the Nassau Beach Hotel on Cable Beach. A traditional Junkanoo 'rush-out' is held every Friday at 8pm. Johnny Canoe also offers live Bahamian and Caribbean music courtesy of Herbie and Da Crew from 7:30pm to 12 midnight on weekends.

The King & Knights native show and dance club, just west of Johnny Canoe, also features the excitement of Junkanoo. Patrons enjoy a thrilling evening of fire dancing, singing, Junkanoo, acrobatics and flaming hoop demonstrations. The show is held Monday through Saturday at 8:30pm. Admission is $25 for the show or $45 for the show and a three-course meal.

The Indigo Cafe, also located at Cable Beach, features live music on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 8 to 11pm.

Splendour & ambience
For those seeking an evening of fine dining and sophisticated splendour, look no further than Chez Willie, on West Bay Street, just west of downtown, which features live music by pianist Joe Winder and contemporary favourites by Rusty Armbrister Friday through Sunday, starting at 7:30pm.

East Villa, located on East Bay Street, features light piano music by Philip McPhee from 7-11pm, Monday through Saturday.

The newly opened but well-known Cafe Martinique, in Marina Village at Atlantis, features live piano music for diners at this upscale recreation of the original restaurant where James Bond was known to drink a martini ?shaken, not stirred."

Villaggio Wine and Cocktail Bar, at Caves Village on West Bay Street, features a live jazz band and dancing on Fridays from 9:30pm until 1am.

Graycliff, Montagu Gardens and Black Angus Grille at the Wyndham Nassau Resort also offer contemporary and classical piano music to accompany fine dining.

Starry night
In the mood for something completely different? Enjoy the sights of Nassau Harbour at night aboard a catamaran. Flying Cloud Catamaran Cruises offers a 2-1/2-hour evening cruise around Nassau Harbour on Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings. Guests aboard the 57-ft catamaran enjoy complimentary hot and cold hors d'oeuvres and a glass of wine or tropical cocktail. A cash bar is also available. Cruises depart at 6pm from the Paradise Island Ferry Terminal. Dinner cruises featuring a three-course Bahamian meal are offered by charter only.

Columbus Tavern, at Paradise Harbour Club & Marina, features live jazz, R&B and popular Bahamian favourites Friday and Saturday from 7 until 10pm.

The sounds of popular Bahamian rhythms can be experienced through a one-man band featured at the Oasis Lounge at Club Land'Or Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday starting at 7pm.

Friday's Soon Come, on East Bay Street, features a live Bahamian band on Friday and Saturday starting at 8pm.

A one-stop shop of evening entertainment, Atlantis features everything from romantic dining to an evening full of laughter. Calypso, golden oldies and Top 40 hits can be enjoyed courtesy of the Tony Seymour Duo at Plato's indoor/outdoor coffee and cocktail bar, Thursday through Saturday from 9pm until 1am.

Fall off your chair with laughter at Joker's Wild Comedy Club in the Coral Towers with local and visiting comedians from the US and Canada. Comics hit the stage at 9:30pm, Tuesday through Sunday.

Cozy evenings
Above the bright lights and bustling casino activity at Cable Beach is The Stage Lounge at the Wyndham Nassau Resort. Relax with a cocktail and enjoy live music courtesy of Dream Quest, a three-piece band that plays a little bit of everything, including your requests, Thursday through Saturday starting at 9pm. Catch the variety show just downstairs at the Rainforest Theatre in the Crystal Palace Casino.

Downtown, the Blue Note Lounge at the British Colonial Hilton features jazz, blues and soul in comfortable, plush surroundings on Friday and Saturday nights.

'Til sunrise
Guests at SuperClubs Breezes at Cable Beach can dance the night away at Hurricanes Disco. The Beach Hut, a popular local hangout, features karaoke on Tuesday and Friday nights. Dance at Cocktails & Dreams, just west of downtown, or party as the Bahamians do at Arawak Cay.

Kafe Kalik, beside Breezes, features live music by New Wave on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.

Stop in for a pint and catch the latest football and rugby scores at the Cricket Club where English pub-style food and atmosphere reign.

Late nights get busy along the downtown strip. Here you will find the Cuban-themed Flamingo and Cafe Habana; energetic nightclubs Fluid Lounge and Bahama Boom; and a lively downstairs pub, The Drop Off, which serves food until 6am. Heading east, play a round of pool at First Down Sports Bar, or continue on to Hammerheads Bar & Grill, and Club Waterloo. Across the bridge on Paradise Island, visit Dragons nightclub at Atlantis or mix with friends, both new and old, at The Green Parrot overlooking Nassau Harbour at Hurricane Hole Marina.

Ready for more action in the late evening and early morning hours? Then let the good times roll with a throw of the dice at the Casino at Atlantis or Crystal Palace Casino on Cable Beach. Try your hand at poker, blackjack, baccarat or spin the roulette wheel.

From day to night and night to day, you can fill every moment of your visit to The Bahamas with fun. Pick up your free copy of What-to-do magazine for a complete list of attractions.
