DINING & ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE - JULY 2006

Activities galore

Fun in the sun for everyone

Beyond the walls of your hotel is a world of adventure just waiting to be explored. Whether on land or at sea, there are many fascinating things for you to do in Nassau and Paradise Island. Finding out what?s available and how to get there is easy; just pick up a copy of the What-to-do magazine and a copy of Bahamas Trailblazer Maps ? both free from your hotel?s activities desk.

Undersea adventure
Getting to know some of The Bahamas? underwater denizens is an experience you won?t soon forget. Snorkelling is a fun and easy way to explore the colourful and diverse marine life forms that call the shallow reefs home. Many half-day snorkelling trips are available.

Scuba diving is better still. And even if you haven?t dived before, operators offer classes in which you can be certified quickly. Bahama Divers, a PADI five-star facility, offers two-tank morning dives and single-tank afternoon dives daily. Dives include wrecks, reefs, walls and their speciality, the Lost Blue Hole dive.

Stuart Cove?s Aqua Adventures also offers scuba trips to reefs where you can discover a wide range of marine life. For a unique underwater experience try Stuart Cove?s Scenic Underwater Bubble, a one-man submersible that lets you explore the depths without wearing scuba gear.

Dolphin Encounters will take you on a half-hour boat ride to nearby Blue Lagoon Island where you can interact with friendly bottlenose dolphins. Pet or hug a dolphin while standing on a shallow-water platform or actually get in the water and swim with these intelligent mammals.

Island excursions
Another way to experience Bahamian waters is by boat. Flying Cloud Catamaran Cruises offers half-day cruises Monday to Saturday and a five-hour Sunday cruise to tranquil Rose Island, including snorkelling and lunch. Also on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, enjoy an evening cruise around scenic Nassau Harbour.

Island World Adventures offers full day excursions aboard high-speed powerboats to the beautiful Exuma cays. Enjoy a delicious Bahamian lunch, snorkel and explore the reefs or find your own spot on a pristine beach and simply relax.

Flying Cloud and Island World Adventures both depart from the Paradise Island Ferry Terminal.

Land trekking
Another way to explore New Providence is on foot. A souvenir hunt through the stores in Nassau and Paradise Island is always fun, or venture into the famous Nassau straw market downtown at the western end of Bay St.

Paintings, sculptures and other works by talented Bahamian artists can be seen daily at the National Art Gallery of The Bahamas, located in historic Villa Doyle on West Hill St.

Take yourself on a walking tour of historic downtown Nassau. Don?t forget the narrow side streets and cul-de-sacs, with boutiques and quaint caf?s.

Ardastra Gardens, Zoo & Conservation Centre off Chippingham Rd is one of the finest little zoos in the world and one of only a few that have a resident flock of breeding flamingos. Every day there?s a demonstration of marching flamingos, responding to the calls of their human drill sergeant. On your way back downtown, stop at the nearby Fish Fry, near Arawak Cay, for some authentic Bahamian food: try a conch salad and a refreshing Bahama Mama at any one of the colourful native restaurants.
