Visitors to The Bahamas are often dazzled by our turquoise waters and pristine beaches and by the kaleidoscope of flowers that bloom almost everywhere.
In The Bahamas, you?ll find bougainvillea in shades of deep red, orange, purple and white; the bright pink blossoms of the shaving brush tree and the golden flowers of the yellow elder?The Bahamas? national flower.
There are many more beautiful and unusual blooms that grace our gardens, pathways and roadsides; and while you can?t take them home as souvenirs, you can take home Flowers of The Bahamas and Caribbean Basin, a book of colour photographs by nature enthusiast Linda M Huber.
Vanilla Orchid
Vanilla orchids are the primary source of commercial vanilla, obtained from the flowers? seed pods.
Shaving Brush Tree
The pink bristles of this unique flower give the shaving brush tree its name.
Allamanda
Also known as yellow bell, golden trumpet and buttercup flower, allamanda has large, yellow, trumpet-shaped flowers. It?s naturalized throughout the tropics.
Tiger?s Claw
Tiger?s claw is named for its sharp, pointed petals and rich coral colour.
Jacaranda
Native to tropical and subtropical regions of South and Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean, jacaranda ranges in size from shrubs to large trees and is renowned for its display of flowers.
Oleander
Oleander is used extensively as an ornamental plant because of its shape and brightly coloured flowers; careful though, the blooms are toxic.
Poor Man?s Orchid
Poor man?s orchid varies in colour from purple to yellow. The trees, which can be quite large, bloom between January and June.
Frangipani
Also known as plumeria, frangipani comes in a variety of colours from yellow to pink and is highly fragrant.
Bougainvillea
The actual flower of the bougainvillea is small and white but is surrounded by purple, magenta, red, pink, white, orange or yellow bracts. It is often seen covering walls and fences.
Wild Mamee
The graffiti tree, or pitch apple, is best known as the wild mamee.
Passion Flower
The decorative passion flower is a climbing or trailing plant that is widely grown in subtropical regions and yields a delicious fruit.
Water Hyacinth
The beautiful but invasive water hyacinth has a sturdy stalk that supports up to 15 lavender to pinkish flowers. It is one of the fastest growing plants.
Poinsettia
Associated with Christmas, poinsettia is native to southern Mexico, Central America and Africa. Its bracts, which can range from flaming red to pink and white, are often mistaken for flowers. The actual flower is small and yellow.
Heliconia
Heliconia is native to the tropical Americas and is related to the banana plant.
Yellow Elder
With its bright, sunny blooms, the yellow elder is the national flower of The Bahamas.
