Golfer's paradise coming soon

Tiger and Ernie launch a new Bahamian course

Three proposed developments in New Providence, including one backed by PGA superstars Tiger Woods and Ernie Els, are going to establish New Providence as a top golfing destination in the not-too- distant future.

Woods and Els have joined with the Tavistock Group?an investment company launched by UK billionaire and Lyford Cay resident Joe Lewis?to create the Albany Golf & Beach Club. Under an agreement with the Bahamian government, construction was set to begin in 2007. One of the resort?s major attractions will be a championship course designed by Els, set to open in late 2008.

Along with a beautiful course, expect top-notch golf instruction and practice facilities at this coming 565-acre oceanfront resort. The upscale retreat in southwest New Providence will also feature an equestrian centre and a marina built to service yachts of up to 245 feet.

Woods to play here
Woods says he hopes to spend more time in The Bahamas when the new resort opens, and he looks forward to ?playing Ernie on our new golf course.? The South African will have to sharpen his game though, as Woods won his 7th PGA event in a row in January 2007 (The Buick Invitational in San Diego). ?It?s a great opportunity,? said Els, whose design company was already working on the new course in early 2007. ?We plan to design a phenomenal golf experience for all types of players.?

Nicklaus at Baha Mar
Tagged by its builders as a ?resort metropolis,? the new Baha Mar redevelopment of Cable Beach will add Las Vegas-style entertainment, world-class shopping and the largest casino in the region, not to mention a special golf course.

A Jack Nicklaus Signature Course will be completed in phase one of the construction. Among other features, the course will be accessible by a specially designed waterway.

?We wanted a formidable and reputable name in the design business and Nicklaus is the top,? says Chris Lewis, golf manager for Radisson.

Norman at South Ocean
At the same time, Greg Norman is redesigning the South Ocean Golf Club, a longtime favourite of local golfers, at the southwestern end of New Providence.

A new irrigation system will revitalize the course, which had been damaged by tropical storms. Holes will be repositioned to take better advantage of ocean views. Norman is also building wider fairways for less accomplished golfers. This course was originally designed by the legendary Joe Lee in 1972.

Meanwhile, the exclusive Ocean Club Golf Course on Paradise Island has added a new high-tech club-fitting and teaching system that will help duffers improve their games.

The championship Tom Weiskopf-course at the One&Only Ocean Club is open only to guests at the Atlantis resort.

?We?ve partnered with Callaway Golf to implement the Optifit Driver System, where players are fitted with the proper driver head and shaft for their body types,? says T J Baggett, general manager for golf.

?Hitting the ball high with a lower spin can help propel the ball further and improve a golfer?s game,? says Baggett. ?The system helps golfers improve in ways they may not be able to on their home courses.?
