Great time to hit the links
Grand Bahama's golfing future

This is a great year to hit the links in Freeport. Perfect greens, beautiful vistas and tropical weather are making Grand Bahama a golfer's paradise.

Three courses are up and runningFortune Hills Golf and Country Club and two courses offered by The Westin and Sheraton hotels at Our Lucaya: The Lucayan and The Reef. All three offer a unique playing experience.

The Fortune Hills course is in "excellent condition" and is attracting plaers from England, Ireland and Canada, along with a loyal local membership, says owner Walter Kitchen."We're looking forward to a good season."

This nine-hole championship course was designed in 1967 by Dick Wilson and Joe Lee. "It's a popular golf course We cater to both Bahamians and visitors and they keep coming back," says Kitchen, who notes that some members have been with the club for 25 years.

The island's oldest course-the 6,824-yard Lucayan, designed by Dick Wilson in 1962-is a challenging layou with different tees on each hole that turn it into a full course.

Staff for The Lucayan and the 6,930-yard Reef course say both are also in prime condition.

Bright future
There's a bright future for golf in Grand Bahama. The island will become a golfin Mecca with the addition of two much-talked-about, championship courses in West End.

These are part of the proposed multi-billion-dollar Ginn sur Mer multi-use resort complex now under construction.

The Florida-based Ginn company is investing a reported$75 million in these courses, to be designed by former PGA stars Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer.

Two other courses in Freeport, The Ruby and The Emerald at the Royal Oasis Resort, remain closed this year, after extensive hurricane damage in 2004. Howeve, hopes are high they will be reopened under new owners.
