Educated noses
Perfumers perfect their skills

It will come as no surprise that Britney Spears and Paris Hilton do not create the scents they sponsor.

Skilled perfumers weave together specific aromas to come up with an ideal fragrance for a particular client, whether it’s a celebrity or a fashion house such as Calvin Klein, Dolce & Gabbana or Issey Miyake.

To become a perfumer, or a “nose” as they’re called in the industry, it takes more than knowing what smells good. Those aspiring to the craft train for years as an apprentice to a skilled perfumer, learning the principles of chemistry and honing their already keen sense of smell.

While becoming a professional perfumer is daunting, those with an average sense of smell can still create their own scents at Fragrance of The Bahamas in Freeport.

Visitors to the perfume factory are treated to a behind-the-scenes tour where they see how perfumes, colognes and lotions are made. They even have an opportunity to mix their very own fragrance.

Chrisanne Aston, vice-president of Fragrance of The Bahamas, explains that the factory has about 40 oils, some consisting of hundreds of ingredients that make up a particular scent.

“We order our oils from all over the world, but some we bring in are those that people are already familiar with, like Calvin Klein’s Escape and Eternity, Issey Miyake and Dolce & Gabbana,” says Aston. “Then they can make their own ‘Coconut Escape’ or a ‘Lemon-Lime’ version of an Issey Miyake scent.”

Fragrance of The Bahamas has its own signature scents such as Pink Pearl, a frangipani floral; Goombay, a Caribbean-oriented scent of ginger and cinnamon; and Sand, a citrus scent of lemons, limes and oranges.

“We wanted to characterize fragrances that are associated with The Bahamas,” says Aston. She adds that their newest fragrance, Bahama Mama, smells just like the Bahama Mama drink. “It is very popular with younger people and spring breakers in particular,”she says.

Make them or buy them, you can find a special scent just for you in Grand Bahama.
