Special dives for beginners and pros

‘If you’re a trained scuba diver who wants to do something unique, you’ll find some interesting opportunities here. The Underwater Explorers Society (UNEXSO) in Port Lucaya offers a variety of special dives.

One of them is a cave dive at Ben’s Cavern, which has an inland entrance in the Lucayan National Park. This underwater cave system is one of the largest in the world. A certified cave diver takes guests through 200 ft of the cavern, within the lighted area, where they can see “amazing stalactites and stalagmites, crystals and fossilized reef sections,” according to expert cave diver Cristina Zenato.

Another unusual location is called Buddha’s Heads, a shallow dive site with an average depth of 30 ft. This site, Zenato says, features “stunning isolated coral heads that go from the sandy bottom all the way to the surface.”

For an extra-special experience, you could make a night dive on Theo’s Wreck, which lies under 100 ft of water. This 230-ft ship, scuttled in 1982, lies on a flat, sandy floor among a few isolated coral banks, between the deep reef and the drop-off. It is encrusted with multicoloured vegetation, and many species of sea life call it home. At night, this wreck is even more beautiful. “The colours and the abundance of life are just amazing,” Zenato says.

For all these excursions, divers must have made at least 20 to 30 dives. No special certification is required for the cave dive, because the limited guided tour is intended only to be “an experience for divers to see if they like the cavern environment and, if interested, to sign up for a cave-diving course.” To make the Theo’s Wreck dive, guests must have done a night dive before, and they must make a daytime dive on the wreck first.

All these special dives are offered by request only.
