Four superb courses await
There’s plenty of variety for golfers in Grand Bahama, whether they carry a hefty handicap or play to scratch. There are four courses within easy reach of anyone in Freeport and Port Lucaya.
The nine-hole gem at the Fortune Hills Golf and Country Club on East Sunrise Hwy is a favourite among visitors. It exudes the friendly atmosphere of a country club but is also open to the public–as are all the courses on Grand Bahama.
Fortune Hills is a nine-hole par-72 course of just over 6,916 yards, designed more than 40 years ago by the famous partnership of Dick Wilson and Joe Lee. Golfers play to nine greens from different tees to experience a full game.
Wilson and Lee also cooperated in building Grand Bahama’s first golf course (1962), the picturesque Lucayan at Balao and Midshipman roads. After several renovations, and at just over 6,800 yards, the par-72 Lucayan still retains many of its original features, including tight doglegs and elevated greens.
Nearby on Sea Horse Rd is the more contemporary 6,930-yard Reef, built in 2000 by Robert Trent Jones Jr. This par 72 has wide fairways but lightning-fast greens, along with an unpredictable ocean breeze that can toughen up the course.
Finally, there’s The Ruby, also designed by Wilson and Lee, located on the north side of West Sunrise Hwy. The Ruby was knocked out of commission by back-to-back hurricanes in 2004, along with its sister course, The Emerald, which still remains closed.
The 18-hole, par-72 Ruby received a $6-million renovation by Jim Fazio Golf Design Group. It is considered to be a relatively easy course from the white tees but much more challenging for men from the blues.
