Introduction to diving

Learn to dive in a single day

For anyone who has wanted to try scuba diving but never had the time, here’s your chance. The top-notch dive companies located on Grand Bahama can teach you the basics in almost no time and then escort you on your first dive.

Introduction to scuba programmes, offered almost every day, are designed for people who have never tried diving before, including children.

Schooling begins with a short orientation lesson, followed by a swimming pool session. There an instructor explains all the equipment that will be used on an actual dive and lets you practice using it. Training usually takes about an hour and a half.

The Discover Scuba Diving programme is offered daily except on Wednesday and Saturday at the Underwater Explorers Society (UNEXSO), located at Port Lucaya Marina, beginning at 12:30pm.

“This is not a certification class,” explains Cristina Zenato, the diving supervisor at UNEXSO, “but an experience.” She says the programme for newbies is “a very good course for those people who have limited time. It allows them to go scuba diving at one of the locations where certified divers go. It’s fun, interesting and it opens a new world.”

UNEXSO takes students on a 15-minute boat ride to “one of our beautiful and colourful shallow reefs,” she says, “sometimes with a chance to see a small tugboat wreck.”

Grand Bahama Scuba offers a similar program at the Ocean Reef Yacht Club. They take students on a 10-minute trip to Silver Reef.

UNEXSO also offers a full range of thrilling dives, including wrecks, reefs, caves (for experienced divers only) and a thrilling shark-feeding dive.

UNEXSO pioneered this dive almost 20 years ago, now held at a site called Shark Junction. During this dive, you’ll observe UNEXSO’s experienced staff feed and interact with large Caribbean reef sharks.
