Pampering in paradise

WHAT-TO-DO - NASSAU, CABLE BEACH & PARADISE ISLAND - JULY 2004

Pampering in paradise

Therapy for body and soul

Some would say The Bahamas is nature?s spa. Strolling along a sandy beach serves as a wonderful foot scrub. Taking a dip in the azure ocean can double as a soothing hydrotherapy session. Relaxing on a beach towel, allowing the warmth of the sun to envelop you, rivals the finest heat wrap.

For some, nature?s therapy is enough, but for those who want more, all the essential services nature lacks can be found in spas throughout New Providence and Paradise Island.

Paradise found

Nestled within the Atlantis resort is the Mandara Spa, a haven for those wishing to relax and be rejuvenated.

The spa features 24 treatment rooms, seven of which are specifically designed for facial treatments. A full menu of services is available, including massages, facials, body treatments, aromatherapy and a hair and beauty salon.

The Mandara Spa also has two tropical rain showers, a sauna, two steam rooms and a Thalassotherapy pool. ?The Thalassotherapy pool is a pool of salt water which is heated between 98 and 102°F,? explains Charmaine Burrows, sales and marketing manager for Mandara Spa.

?Many of the guests at Atlantis check into the spa first when they arrive,? says therapist Rochelle Scavella. ?They just need a way to relax after travelling.?

When receiving massage therapy, clients have a choice of an indoor therapy room, which is dimly lit and filled with soothing music, or an open-air pavilion near the Thalassotherapy pool.

One popular treatment package is Cleito?s Tropical Tryst. The Tryst begins with the Elemis Exotic Coconut Rub and Milk Ritual Wrap, designed to polish the body and soothe the senses. After the wrap treatment comes the Elemis Well-Being Massage which uses eastern massage techniques and warm aromatherapy oils to create a sense of inner peace. This is followed by the La Therapie Oxygen Lifting Facial and Deluxe Tropical Manicure and Pedicure.

Also on Paradise Island is the Ocean Club Spa at the One&Only Ocean Club. This spa features eight Balinese-style private treatment villas with open-air gardens in which guests receive a choice of Asian and European-style massages, facials, manicures, pedicures and salon services.

Massages begin with the Floral Foot Wash Ritual, a Balinese ceremony that symbolizes the cleansing of the soul. Following the 60- or 90-minute massage session, guests can sip Japanese tea in a private open-air garden.

Couples therapy

The Couples Massage at the Sandals Royal Bahamian Resort & Spa on Cable Beach is a sure way to add zip to your relationship or enhance your honeymoon. Spa manager Sanchia Henry explains that couples are taught massage techniques which they can practice on each other.

?It?s a souvenir couples can take home with them,? she says.

Another popular treatment is the Sunrise Sea and Scrub, in which guests receive a wrap, seaweed peel and massage on a pier. Following the session, guests rinse off in the ocean.

A variety of massages, facials, body treatments, and fitness classes is also available as well as a spa salon, which offers a selection of beauty treatments including body waxing, hair styling, cuts, hair braiding, make-up application and paraffin treatments for hands and feet.

The choice is yours

Other spas to consider during your visit include the Azure Spa at the British Colonial Hilton and a number of independent spas and salons such as Windermere Day Spa & Salon at Harbour Bay Shopping Centre, Hair International Skin and Day Spa and Miracles Day Spa, both at Sandyport, and Beauty by Ilissa Faye at the Mall at Marathon.

It doesn?t matter where on Paradise Island or New Providence you look, you?ll find all the pampering you need to turn your vacation into pure relaxation
