Jack Nicklaus

Designs a gem

Famous architects have refashioned the venerable Cable Beach Golf Course several times since Emmet Devereux built it 81 years ago, but never more dramatically than Jack Nicklaus is expected to remodel it.

Plans drawn up by Nicklaus’s design firm include a new road which will run through four existing holes and the opening up of a large new area to the west for golf, a place once known as Hobby Horse Hall–a former racetrack (1934-1977).

The new Jack Nicklaus Signature Course–the highest tier of the company’s design offerings–will be a 72-par layout on both sides of several large new ponds strung out along the multi-billion-dollar Baha Mar development proposed for Cable Beach.

Originally, the development was to have included participation by Harrah’s Entertainment Inc of Las Vegas, but that company pulled out, stalling the $2.5 billion project. It got back on track earlier this year when state-owned Chinese companies agreed to help finance what is being billed as a “resort metropolis” with several hotels and a retail, dining and entertainment complex built around canals and lagoons.

Included in the golf package will be a brand new clubhouse and many other facilities.

Long for its time
Devereux’s original layout was created on the eve of the Great Depression in 1929. It was not much over 6,000 yards, but that was considered longish when golfers used hickory-shafted clubs. Back then, big hitters were happy to drive the ball 230 yards. That compares to the 350-yard monsters that top golfers hit today.

The new course will be a championship course in every sense of the word–well over 7,000 yards and capable of being used as the venue for a PGA tournament. But it will also offer a pleasant and interesting experience for less proficient golfers.

Other courses in Nassau include Ocean Club on Paradise Island, and the exclusive Lyford Cay Golf Course in western New Providence. A third, the Blue Shark course designed by Greg Norman, was closed at press time.
