January 1
New Year’s Day. Public holiday to be observed Jan 3. Junkanoo Parade takes place on Bay St starting at 1am. Costumed groups take to the streets in a colourful display of dance, music and celebration. Prizes awarded at 8am.

January 12
Opening of the Supreme Court begins with a service at Christ Church Cathedral attended by members of the judiciary dressed in traditional wigs and gowns. Following the service, members proceed from the church to the Supreme Court at Rawson Sq. The Royal Bahamas Police Force Band performs.

January 1
Bulla Regatta, Exuma. C-Class competitors vie for first place at this annual event. Tel 502-0600, Regatta Unit, Ministry of Youth, Sports & Culture.

January 16
Marathon Bahamas 2011: Join runners from around the world in a three-segment cross-country full-marathon, half-marathon and relay marathon for schools, churches, businesses or families. Contact Sunshine Insurance offices at 502-6500 for details.

January 22
Enjoy an elegant black tie evening of dinner and music with Bizet to Broadway at Old Fort Club, West Bay St. Featuring performances by soprano Gianna Corbisiero, baritone Alexander Dobson, tenor Keith Klassen, mezzo soprano Beverly McArthur and pianist Michael McMahon. February 18-19
The Nassau Music Society presents a programme of light classical music performed by talented quartet, Quartetto Gelato–The Best of QG Feb 18 at The Performing Arts Centre, College of The Bahamas, 8pm, and Feb 19 at St Paul’s Church Hall, Lyford Cay, 7:30pm. February 19
Heart Ball, Sheraton Nassau Beach Resort. Cocktails 7:15pm, dinner served at 8:30pm. Annual event to raise funds for Bahamian children in need of heart surgery. Grand prize raffle and door prizes. Tel 327-0806 for ticket information.

March 19-20
The Bahamas Kennel Club’s 31st Annual All Breed Dog Show and Obedience Trials, 8:30am-2pm, venue TBA. Watch as The Bahamas’ top dogs strut their stuff and compete for Best in Show. Tel 393-1360 or visit www.bahamaskennelclub.org

March 29-30
The Nassau Music Society presents performances by violinist Alexandre Dacosta and pianist Wonny Song March 29 at Government House, 8pm and March 30 at St Paul’s Church Hall, Lyford Cay, 8pm. April 18-23
National Family Island Regatta, Elizabeth Harbour, Exuma. The Bahamas’ best sailors representing every major island in the country compete in locally-built sloops for the coveted “Best in The Bahamas” title. June 1-5
Island hop across to Eleuthera for the annual Pineapple Festival in Gregory Town. Enjoy fun-filled activities including the pineapple eating contest, pineapple cooking contest, old time pineapple “crazy” sports, 40-mile Pineapple Cycling Classic, plaiting of the Pineapple Pole and the Little Miss Pineapple Princess Pageant.
